If you’re looking for something truly unique, with a hint of colour, magic and light, then you need to make your way to Delapré Abbey this Christmas at the Northampton Winter Light Trail is the latest sparkling and dazzling festive event to come to Northamptonshire!
This is the first time something like this has come to the abbey and it’s definitely something I’ve never experienced before. It’s going to be a go-to destination for friends and family this Christmas!
As you first arrive, you are instantly greeted by the glittering lights shining on the abbey itself, where there’s a lovely little seating area consisting of wooden benches and tables, plus some very cosy mini chalets which you will have to book in advance by heading to the Apres Bar website – these are ideal if you want to snuggle up before or after your trail during the colder nights.
The Apres Bar itself is there to serve all your festive favourite drinks from mulled wine and cider, to more traditional beverages like wine, beer and there’s even a vodka shot board and some Christmas cocktails such as Santas Little Porn Star – ooh eer!
There are also two food vans where you can grab some tasty refreshments, which scream ‘German Christmas market’ vibes for me – enjoy treats like Bratwurst hot dogs, burgers, crepes, waffles and some of the most sugary and fluffy doughnuts I’ve ever tasted – drizzled in Nutella, Belgian Chocolate or Biscoff!
You can be rest assured, you’ll be looked after prior to arriving and you can make it into a fabulous evening out with your friends and family. But I bet you want to know all about the Winter Light Trail itself…
The Winter Light Trail
You’re taken on a truly magical adventure as you’re taken inside the walled garden where the light illuminations start immediately. Although it’s dark, you won’t be in darkness for too long thanks to these amazing displays.
From interactive features, hanging lights, UV lighting, a huge light-up bauble, glistening snow falling down, a disco maze and plenty of photo opportunities, I’ll let some of these pictures do the talking but these photos, of course, don’t do it justice compared to actually visiting and seeing the lights for yourself.
A couple of things to note:
- It is quite dark and because you’re walking around woodland the majority of the time, my best advice would be to wear boots or wellies in case it’s wet/muddy and although it’s tempting to get distracted by the lights or taking photos of them, make sure you watch where you’re going!
- If you have a baby or young toddler, I wouldn’t say it’s pram-friendly so bare that in mind!
- There are plenty of stewards scattered across the light trail, so if you need assistance, someone is always near by.
- Be prepared to spend some money – though it’s a worthwhile experience, you’re looking at spending £5 each on food and drinks go from £5 at the bar too on top of your ticket price.
Overall, expect to wander through what can only be described as a light-up fairytale that will tickle all of your senses! I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope I can bring some of my other friends and my mum along to this to experience themselves too!
If you want to see the lights in action, I filmed a reel on my Instagram to give you a taste!
